Student Assistance - High School

The Linn-Mar High School Student Assistance Program is based on a prevention model that seeks to address the risk factors that have been shown to increase risky behaviors.  The Student Assistance Program offers ongoing support groups, crisis intervention services, mentoring and short term counseling services.  Recommendations for additional services and referrals are also provided.

Program Description

Student Assistance Counselor, Kevin McCauley, Room G019, ext. 3047 - provides confidential services including individual counseling regarding personal concerns, group counseling, a safe place for substance use assessments and education about personal life issues.  Any concerned person including teachers, school counselors, parents, administrators, friends of student, etc. may refer students.  The student may also refer to the student assistance counselor.

ALL INFORMATION RECEIVED BY THE STUDENT ASSISTANCE COUNSELOR IS HELD HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL BY FEDERAL LAW AND IS NOT INCLUDED IN STUDENT RECORDS

School Social Worker, Lisa Mooney, Room I219, ext. 3129 - provides individual, family, and group counseling regarding family and emotional concerns.  Referrals for service may come from any source.  The school social worker also facilitates Teen Screen, which identifies students who may be suffering from undiagnosed mental health issues.

High School Student Assistance Team - This team, which consists of twelve staff members, can assist students who voluntarily contact them for support, counseling, resources of information in a confidential manner. The student assistance team is not intended to provide therapy or substitute for a therapeutic relationship between the student and a helping professional. Students in need to additional counseling will be referred to the student assistance counselor or an outside agency/professional.
Student Support Groups -
 C.O.D.E. - a group for children of diverse environments.
 INSIGHT - a confidential group for those concerned about their own substance use.
 SODA - a group for students opposed to drugs and alcohol
 T.R.Y. - [Teens Reaching Youth], a high school group which provides education about productive, 
               healthy lifestyles for Linn-Mar elementary and middle school students.
Staff/Student Mentoring Program - Selected high school staff serve as mentors to identified students who could benefit from a positive supportive role model.  These staff members will have regular contact and provide support throughout the school year in all areas of the student's life.
Traumatic Event Response Plan - The High School Student Assistance Team facilitates the crisis plan when a traumatic event occurs.
James E. Purtell Scholarship - This scholarship is selected by the high school student assistance team and presented to a senior who has made notable personal growth since entering high school.
